Me – a student on NCJ
My name is Melody Wu, and I come from Taipei, Taiwan. I study English Language and Literature in Soochow University. The reason why I choose to study in Norwegian Cultural Journey is because I can gain more knowledge on history, language and perspectives from Nordic countries. In my hometown university, I learn English Linguistics, Romanticism English Literature and Children Literature. Therefore, I’m glad that I can come here and compare what I have learned from ancient English literature with old Norse history. I also look forward to discovering similarities and differences in various aspects between Taiwan and Norway. In fact, I haven’t decided which career I want to have in the future, but I believe I can find my own potential during the adventure in Norway.
Taiwan is a tropical island located in East Asia. Many people visit Taiwan because of its wonderful scenery and delicious food. Taiwan is also famous of its convenience and cheap price. Unlike Norway, there are convenience stores in just walking distance on the street in Taiwan. I’m still trying to get used of it. Taipei, capital of Taiwan, is a very busy city full with people, vehicles and high buildings. In contrast, Vestfold is surrounded by forest, oceans and fields. I can see nature everywhere. The air is also much fresher than Taipei. I really enjoy watching the scenery when sitting in the bus.
Campus Vestfold is a little bit similar to Soochow University. The scale of them is not that large. USN is built beside the forest and lake; Soochow is built on the mountain and near a creek. However, USN is much newer and has more sources provided to students than Soochow. I also like that teachers in this campus are as kind as friends because the relationship between teachers and students in Taiwan is more distant.
The dorm where I live is called Fagerlund, which is a new building located at campus with a beautiful ocean view. There is also a beach volleyball court beside the building. My room faces the campus so that I can see the breathtaking sunset every evening. It is the very first time that I live alone due to the exchanging program. I’ve never lived without my family since I was born. Besides, I live in a single unit with private kitchen. Because I seldom cook at home, it’s quite relax to make any food I want on my own.
